Do you enjoy cozy mysteries? Were you enticed by the latest vampire love story? Maybe it’s time for you to try a Cozy Paranormal.
Cozy Paranormal is a new sub-genre of paranormal / fantasy fiction where the gore and tension are downplayed and the characters represent one or more groups of magical creatures like vampires or shape shifters. Here are some things to help you understand the genre.
- The main character is an everyday person with a charming appeal to the reader. Kimie and her best friend Sydney met in college and instantly shared a “gut feeling” connection that built a special bond between these mischievous best friends.
- Gore and tension are downplayed.
Find out why Vampires turn to dust when they die.
- Magical creatures feel like they could be someone you know.
Owners of construction companies or gyms, these people are your neighbors.
- Magic can’t solve everything.
Life isn’t scripted and like humans, magical creatures can die. Being a vampire has its own laws and life limits. If you are evil, there are consequences.
- Good must always triumph in the end.
You have to read the book if you want to find out how the ending happens!
- Romance, especially in a series, keeps the hope for better times alive.
Love comes in all forms and takes patience. When humans and magicals fall in love, there are always complications.
Check out Chalice Moon for a good example of a cozy paranormal. This is the first book in the new Chalice Princess series by Pat Sawtelle.
Lord Simon Baldevar knew that vampires would walk in daylight once the offspring of two vampires was born. A child whose intermingled blood was excised of the weaknesses that kept the immortals ensnared in darkness. Determined to see sunlight again and heedless of the consequences, Simon forced his unwilling consort, Meghann O’Neill, to conceive his progeny.
Now, Meghann lies completely at Lord Baldevar’s mercy trapped in a coma brought on by premature labor. One man is determined to save Meghann and her child if it survives, her former lover and recently transformed vampire, Jimmy Delacroix. Jimmy knows his newfound immortality is no match for Simon’s centuries-honed strength, but vows to help Meghann. His only allies are the ghost of a vampire monk and a paranormal investigator, Harper Lupeni.
Ms. Lupeni has no idea her newest client is a vampire or how much danger she is truly in. Soon, Jimmy and Harper will discover she has her own long buried, terrifying link to Lord Simon Baldevar, his ancient enemy, Isabelle.
Simon Baldevar and Meghann O’Neill have twins, Elizabeth and Mikal. Elizabeth is a mortal, loving, and normal child while Mikal is his father’s son. Simon and Meghann separated in order to keep their children safe; he to an isolated Highland island with their vampiric son and Meghann to New York to raise their human daughter.
Eighteen years later, despite Simon’s best efforts to raise his son, there are serious issues. In fact, Mikal has absolutely no sense of right or wrong, nor any sense of pleasure or pain. He’s a true sociopath in every sense of the word. To Simon’s dismay, Mikal leaves home on a murderous rampage.
Simon originally got Meghann pregnant to produce the legendary living philosopher’s stone, knowing that his vampire child would possess powers that other vampires could only dream of, including the most fearful of all, Mikal is able to walk in daylight. Now, Simon Baldevar is faced with the most horrifying of choices; be a loving father or a ruthless killer. Either way, he must face what he has unleashed upon the world.
Meghann O’Neill once dreamed of having a child, but that was a long time ago. It was before she had been seduced into a relationship of pleasure and pain, excitement and torture. It was before she had been transformed into a vampire by Lord Simon Baldevar, the cruel sadistic creature that made her cater to his every dark whim and desire. It was before she managed to escape Simon’s clutches leaving him staked out for dead. It was before he returned forty years later to exact his revenge by killing Meghann’s mentor and kidnapping her human lover. It was before Simon held Meghann captive for one fateful night and forced her to conceive his child.
Now, Meghann is on the run not only from Simon, but any vampire that finds out she’s conceived the living Philosopher’s Stone. For centuries, vampires have believed the bred offspring of two vampires will not only enjoy eternal life, but have the ability to walk in daylight.
Meghann, determined to fight to the death, will let no one take her baby from her-especially its treacherous, dangerous father.
Brenda never meant to become a living vampire. As a matter of fact, she didn’t even know that they existed. Her only mistake had been to cross paths with an ancient vampire named Galen. He was charming, educated, and irresistible. In the end, she has been seduced, fed on, transformed, and deceived.
Left for dead, Brenda has to learn to survive in the modern world by herself. At war with her new murderous instincts, she has to earn a living, feed, and not wind up in jail or worse. As she navigates through the strip clubs, muggers, and other dark aspects of her new life, Brenda accidently finds herself pursued by bounty hunters that specialize in hunting down her kind.
As she struggles to remain free, Brenda winds up entangled in a growing conflict between other vampires. Now that she has discovered that she is not alone, is she the predator or the prey?
Dark Chances is the second book in Galen Vampire series. Allan Gilbreath continues to drive the classic vampire motif to a whole new level. New characters and situations set a fast pace in this novel without the familiar legends losing the distinctive shape that they took in Galen. Gilbreath’s astounding attention to detail adds an air of intensity and mystery while keeping the sensual imagery his works are famous for providing to the reader.
Allan Gilbreath is known for his ability to link fantasy with danger. He takes the reader into Brenda’s struggle to survive and overcome the tremendous obstacles of just living day-to-day. Gaining control of her murderous blood lust is just the first step in her attempts to adjust to the deadly lifestyle forced upon her. Dark Chances holds great interest for fans of dark fantasy, horror, and paranormal romance.
Enter a world of passion and violence, decadence and death. Meet Galen, distinguished and mysterious stranger in town on business. Galen is rich in more than one sense, a compelling fellow who knows the way to a woman’s heart. But Galen is having a bad month and nothing is going right for him. A wonderful date turns into an unplanned procreative experience, much to his distress, leaving him responsible for an awkward and demanding youngling. Worse yet, his accountant has gotten curious about the intricate financial network in which he keeps his considerable wealth. Still, Galen draws on his resources to keep everything together, and almost succeeds…
Allan Gilbreath takes the classic vampire motif to a whole new level. He spins the familiar legends into a distinctive shape, as most writers do, and I certainly found the results entertaining. What really makes it work, though, is Gilbreath’s astounding attention to detail. Even the most mundane scenes shimmer with a luxurious light, and the entire story overflows with sensual imagery. This is what most vampire erotica strives to become and falls short of; it also sets a high standard for the fanciful erotica of domination and submission. Gilbreath links fantasy with danger and satisfaction with death to excellent effect, and the plot tension between the various characters sets a wonderful stage for the little details that bring it all to life. Galen holds great interest for fans of horror and romance, especially with the kinky edge that characterizes the best vampire erotica. Highly recommended
