Let’s Plant Something: Season 1 Episode 11: Saffron

Allan decided to see if he could grow the spice saffron. The crocus needs well drained soil, plenty of sunshine, and blooms in the fall. Allan’s plants made it from just planted to blooming in their first year. Since, saffron is harvested from the flowers of the crocus, he got some spice.

Let’s Plant Something: Season 1 Episode 9: The Blackberry Patch

Last year, we bought 30 thornless blackberry plants off the discount racks at the end of the season at a major big box store. The plants were tired and beat up from being on the sales racks for months. We set up a simple trellis system for them and made sure they had plenty of water to get established. This year, the canes produced an impressive amount of fruit for a first run. They will only get better from here.

Let’s Plant Something: Season 1 Episode 7: The Fire Pit Garden

After a brush clearing operation, there was the left over area from where the brush was burned. Allan decided to make it into a garden just to see how it would do. The results have been amazing, Two crops of red potatoes happened in one summer. The bell peppers just kept making and the tomatoes were plentiful. The sweet potatoes stole the show at the very end of the season. This garden is divided into sections with each section being four foot by eight foot. A lot of productivity from a fairly small area.
